What if someone wrote a book on the effects that legalization of gambling would have on society? Well, someone did, and it’s called Casino State: Legalized gambling in Canada. A professor of Sociology from Trent University by the name Dr. Jim Cosgrave was joined by another professor, Thomas Klassen from the York University to compile this book that discusses the socio-economic issues that legalizing of gambling would have on Canada.
In one section of the book the professors state that legalization of canadian online gambling will lead to social norms that may not even have positive effects on society, once the government becomes dependent on the tax revenue generated by the legalization of online gambling. The other issues that the book has concentrated on are morality, consumer effects, risk involved in online gambling, problem gambling like underage gambling and addiction among others.
This book has given a lot to debate about as Canada is slowly moving towards gambling enterprises that are to be owned by the state. As online gambling is expanding at a rapid pace, the need for regulations to safeguard the community from immoral activities is imminent. As the citizens of Canada are ready to face online lottery sales, there is a high level of concern that underage gambling could become an issue.
As much as the book provides great insight into the effects of legalization of gambling, one has to remember that the tax revenue generated by legal online gambling has bailed out a lot of nations that were in financial turmoil.
